What is the Impact of the Agri-Food Immigration Pilot on Canada’s Food Security?

The Agri-Food Immigration Pilot is a new program that was launched in May 2020 by the Canadian government. It is designed to help employers in the agriculture and food processing sectors fill labour shortages with foreign workers. The program is open to employers in the provinces of British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, and Saskatchewan.

The Agri-Food Immigration Pilot is a three-year program that will allow employers to hire foreign workers in certain occupations in the agriculture and food processing sectors. The program is open to employers who are looking to fill positions in the following occupations:

  • Farm Managers
  • General Farm Workers
  • Harvesting Labourers
  • Nursery and Greenhouse Workers
  • Feedlot Workers
  • Food Processing Labourers
  • Meat Processing and Packaging Plant Workers
  • Livestock Workers
  • Poultry Catchers and Processors
  • Fish and Seafood Processing Plant Workers

The program is designed to help employers fill labour shortages in the agriculture and food processing sectors. It is also intended to help employers recruit and retain foreign workers who have the skills and experience needed to fill these positions.

To be eligible for the Agri-Food Immigration Pilot, employers must meet certain criteria. They must demonstrate that they have been unable to fill the position with a Canadian citizen or permanent resident through the Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) process, and they must also demonstrate that they have taken steps to recruit and retain Canadian citizens and permanent residents.

The Agri-Food Immigration Pilot is an excellent program for employers in the agriculture and food processing sectors.
